The Missouri Highway Patrol reported their first fatal accident in the troop “D” area Saturday, since their July 4th holiday counting period began at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3rd. The fatal accident happened in Jasper County on I-44, four-miles east of Carthage.
According to the highway patrol’s website, Saturday’s fatal accident became the state’s 11th overall. In Cass County four occupants and the driver of a car that lost control, and was struck broadsided by another motorist, died on July 4th.
The holiday was the deadliest with a total of seven fatal accidents reported by the highway patrol.
The counting period continues to 11:59 p.m. Sunday. In 2012 four people were killed on Missouri highways during the highway patrol's counting period.
