It’s official – Southwest Airlines says it will fly in and out of the Branson Airport. A news release from the airline, outlining details, was sent out Friday afternoon.
Southwest bought AirTran in 2011, which is a main carrier in and out of Branson, and it was assumed by Airport officials that Southwest would be making the transition at some point.
Southwest says the transition is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Of the 69 cities AirTran served when Southwest acquired it last may, 53 cities are planned to convert to full Southwest Airlines service.
Branson Airport Director Jeff Bourk tells HometownDailyNews.com an exact date hasn’t been announced:

Southwest has said it’s making the changes because smaller markets like Branson have long wanted access to the airline’s destinations on direct flights, and have never before had the opportunity. Southwest said it is excited about the cities chosen to keep in the combined network with AirTran.
The airline said it would cease operations in August at six airports currently served by AirTran, including Sarasota, Florida, and Huntsville, Alabama.
