'Aquaponics Facility' Suggested for Factory Merchants Mall

It might seem like a far-fetched idea to some, but a woman from Galena says she has a plan for the future use of the Factory Merchants Mall in Branson.

Mona Miller is suggesting the City of Branson turn the mall into an Aquaponics Facility, a sustainable food production system that combines aqua-culture with hydro-ponics, producing organically grown food, as well as rearing pools that raise fish for human consumption.

Miller appeared before the Branson Board of Aldermen this week:

Alderwoman Cris Bohinc responded to the idea:

Miller told HometownDailyNews.com after the meeting that it would take an estimated 3-million dollars to start the Aquaponics Facility on the property near Highway 76 andGretna Road.  And while she didn’t have any capital to contribute, she said the city could apply for federal grants to help with the funding for the project.  Miller said once operational, the facility would create 300 year round jobs.

Simon Property Group paid the city 300-thousand dollars earlier this month to break a long term lease on the mall property near Highway 76 and Gretna Road.

Members of the Board thanked Miller for her presentation, saying ideas from the community are welcomed for the property.

Aquaphonics -- the growing of fish and organic foods for human consumption in a closed environment -- is a viable and profitable industry that could use the boost such a business might bring. It is worth exploring. Local resources include the Speraneos of West Plains who have considerable experience.

Why could it not be turned into another Amusement facility like a Science Center, could use the exisiting buildings for that and make it user friendly for all ages

How about an indoor mall like Battlefield?? Most things in Branson require being outside. What do people do when it rains?? No one likes to go to Tanger or the Landing in the rain. People would come from Harrison and that area to shop the mall the closets Malls are Battlefield and Fayetteville. Big mall anyway that have Macys and Dillards and food courts etc.

The science center is a great educational idea. the Aquaponics Facility would create jobs and be beneficial to everyone. They could both be housed is the mall, it should be large enough. Hope someone with the city is listening.

This headline in the Sunday, January 29th issue of the Branson Independent was the most exciting concept for the area. Many in the general area have been involved with the valid concern for local food production and "safe" food that doesn't endanger our health. There is a move across the nation, and indeed the world, of great focus for dedicated local food production as the climate changes and economies are failing, that communities start to think of taking care of their own. With our own local food banks having difficulty in providing for those in need, this type of complex would serve the greater good in so many ways. In my on humble opnion, we don't need another mall or more shopping. I would like to encourage the B of A to seriously consider this very timely and profitable usage for the Mall property. Jobs and food are the new reality...

These are all great ideas, but why not some type of indoor sports complex for hosting tournaments. Children's sports tournaments are hosted year round across the United States. It would create jobs plus bring families in who would need to stay in local motesl and eat at resaturants. How much space is needed for both? Is there enough sq footage to do both Aquaphonics and sports?

To retool The City owned former factory merchants mall into a large scale self energizing Aquaponic growing ( fish and produce) and educational center. Utilizing all made in America green supplies. Creating more then 750 full time year round jobs. The factory will produce enough food to feed our entire region. Then educate visitors to return home with the knowledge and supplies to feed their family. The factory will be specially designed to attract tourist to the facility for the purpose of education. The center will offer daily class on the art of the Aquqponic growing system. In addition to edible produce the center will off vast numbers of home units or kits for shipment to their location. As well a an excellent support system thru our web site. I have gone over this idea a number of times in my mind and have as of yet to find any reason or aspect of this plan that would question whether to do this or not. Give me a reason not to do it!!!

Aquqponics is the most environmentally friendly way to grow food. I believe this idea would be a great idea. We currently grow over 12 vegetables and some fruit ourselves. Aquaponics saves the soil, water, and is resistant to bugs and cold. We would support the idea and participate.
